Part 1: Sixties Freakbeat, Beat and Psych

Fantastic meaty UK Psych classic. The A side is fine and plays EX, however the B side has a mark that can be heard half way through the side, so I would grade the B side as VG-  SOLD

Angel Pavement –Baby You’ve Gotta Stay/Green Mello Hill –Fontana UK EX 

Their first of 2 singles. The B side features their best moment, the delightful popsike of Green Mello Hill SOLD

The Answers –It’s Just a Fear/You’ve Gotta Believe Me –Columbia UK G  

Terrific Freakbeat monster by Tony Hill and associates. Now the single has some issues, vinyl has marks and there is a small edge lift. However, audio-wise the A side plays VG+, the B side is noisier and plays VG-. The condition is reflected in the price, but the A side plays great  SOLD

Brincos –Nobody Wants You Now/The Train –Page One UK EX 

Perfect seemingly unplayed copy of the Spaniards’ best moment, stands with the best of all that Rubbles/Circus Days stuff…what a production! SOLD

Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky Mick and Tich –Frustration/ Hard to Love You –Fontana Dutch VG+/VG+ (small name of cover) 

Holland seems to be the only place where their most raucous track (Frustration) came out on a single. Both sides play EX SOLD

Killer Freakbeat double sider. A few lights marks and some low level crackle. Audio is somewhere between VG and VG+. Initials on B side label.SOLD

By this time Grapefruit was but a name, however both sides of this release were recorded by George Alexander, George Young and Harry Vanda no less. Great under-valued single!

Dean Torrance’s  (Jan and Dean) contemporary Smile recreation. Dean got to hear the unfinished track during the Smile sessions and with the project being shelved saw the opportunity of being the first to release Smile material.

My Dear Watson –The Shame Just Drained/Elusive Face –Parlophone NL VG+ 

The first and only version of Vanda and Young’s masterpiece released when the  Easybeats  Good Times album got shelved. Although relegated to the B side, it’s another testament to the genius of Vanda & Young who produced both sides of the single. Plays EX, slight rubbing on B side label. SOLD

Why in 1973 would an Italian based Brit write about the Kent State Campus killing from 3 years previous? Sound-wise you could think of a protest infused John Kongos with Donovan tendencies over the mother of all slapping Gunshot beats. Great Pic sleeve.

The A side is a 50s pastiche, however the B side is a crunching semi-instrumenal with hand claps and a driving beat punctuated  by shouts of “Big Jump”. The same B side is on Leave It To The Kid…SOLD

Eddie Kidd - Leave it To The Kid/Big Jump 1978 UK Decca Demo EX 

Leave It To The Kid is a bone-crunching-13-double-decker-hopping-semi -smash-stomper by the UK’s own Evel Knievel: Eddie Kidd. Of the Decca singles I have, this is by far the greatest as it’s a truly rousing performance featuring Eddie’s unmistakable vocal range along with a great driving string section. SOLD

Near perfect copy of this great cruncher from Jesse housed in the coveted Man in Gorilla suit cover. The sleeve has a tiny date neatly written on the top of one side of the cover (both sides have the same picture) SOLD

Not quite Glam, not quite Hard Rock, not quite Pop, but it's catchy, all good …no bad

Josuha –Jenny –Magic Carpet CNR NL VG+ (2 inaudible scratches on side 1) /VG+ 

Now, here’s a real treat. Jenny starts off in the mode of the sleeve at a trot but then the riff kicks in and the track turns into a fab Bubblegum/Rock tune with lyrics playing around with old chestnut (mare?) double-entendres about “going for a ride”...It’s all great fun and a top tune. Magic Carpet is nice n’ heavy and here they sing about the magical tripped out properties of cheap plonk.

Libido  Hold on To Your Fire/Weren't Born A Man Mooncrest  UK VG+  (name on label) 

Like a lush Badfinger song, the track then builds into subtly orchestrated track with some fine lead guitar. The vocals by Dana Gillespie are gorgeous conveying both sweetness and sass SOLD

Glad To Know You is a totally fab piece of Psych-Bubblegum-Glam. Hidden on the B side of the full blown heart string-puller Won’t You Join Me, it’s another choice example of the brothers aptitude of coming up trumps on the B side. The song twists and turns, the orchestration is understated, the guitars have real oomph, and production touches like the vocals through the leslie cabinet make this an imaginative yet totally accessible winner. Left Side - Can't You See Me

Left Side -Morning Sunrise/Can't You See Me - Philips 6012610 (1976 NL)

Can’t You See Me is the B side of the last ever Left Side single. The mawkish A side is not worth talking about, but the Peter Koelewijn produced B side is stomping crunching action of the highest order. The track is pure riffarama perfection and the lead vocal is on a par with Earl Vince And The Valiants with its Neo -Rockabilly stance and delivery. The track was probably recorded at an earlier session than the A side and is also available on the hard to find Best Of LP.

Records picked up in Utrecht

Here are some of the singles I picked up in Utrecht. I arrived on the Thursday so was finally able to visit the Da Capo shop http://www.dacaporecords.nl . It’s absolutely great for singles (and LPs -if you like that sort of thing) –the basement (The Beatcave) is crammed full of singles at 1 Euro each and they also have a single bar full of more collectable singles, plus all the singles in the main shop. It’s well worth arriving a day early and checking the shop out. I must have found around 30 singles at Da Capo. The remaining 70 or so singles were found in 3 days of going up and down the aisles at the fair in a mad obsessive daze...Here’s to a return in November to the best record fair in the world!!!

Utrecht Record Fair and Clap Your Hands and Stamp Your Feet

Well, yeah -of course I'll be there!

This time it's even more special as we are launching the Clap Your Hands and Stamp Your Feet CD. A bit less time for me to go digging for singles, but well worth it for a chance to be part of this great project.

Coming out next week, on Excelsior is a compilation CD of early 70s Nederglam !
Fistful of Records Jos and Brit accomplice Robin Wills worked on this thing for some years now, having done all research, compilation and sleeve notes. The CD is entitled "Clap Your Hands And Stamp Your Feet" after Dutch glam's biggest hit record at the time by Bonnie St Claire & Unit Gloria. Other songs included are some totally unknown Glam Rock stompers & crunchers by acts like Booby Trap, The Heavy Dwarfs, Dump, Zingara, Pantherman and Plastic Feet. Among somewhat better known acts like Lemming, Catapult, Left Side and Long Tall Ernie And The Shakers you will discover a multitude of Glam era obscurities here that will blow your socks off and open your mind to some great sounds and beats ! With The Netherlands being the main country in continental Europe to boast a Glam Rock scene, a compilation of this stuff was way overdue. The CD contains 24 songs by 23 acts, plus a 52 page full colour booklet crammed with cool pics, plus the incredible stories behind all bands and songs. Also included are reprints of all original sleeves, whether Dutch or foreign.


The CD will be launched at the Utrecht CD and Record Fair, next saturday April 18th, between 1 and 3 pm. There’s gonna be DJs (well Jos and yours truly), original Nederglam videos, an exhibition of Nederglam memorablia and record sleeves, and there’s a Smyle reunion gig ! Also there will be many ex-glamstars present, like the Catapult guys, the one and only Pantherman, of course Smyle, Lemming singer Wally, some Left Side guys, producer Peter Koelewijn, Mr. Pink Elephant Willem van Kooten, the Booby Trap singer and all members of Bonnie st Claire & Unit Gloria, most probably including queen Bonnie herself !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Left Side –Clap Your Hands And Stamp Your Feet/Be-Bop Baby –Apollo 613017 (1975 France)

This is a rare French only release by Dutch band Left Side (Like A Locomotion). Produced by Peter Koelewijn, this is in fact the same backing track as the Bonnie St. Claire version (you can even hear a bit of off-mic Bonnie at the end). Somehow it doesn’t quite have the same impact, apart from missing Bonnie’s vocals, the mix is perhaps not as powerful.Unless this is due to the mastering?
How many more versions of CYHASYF are still out there? By my latest count we have: Bonnie St. Claire, Left Side, Wild Angels, Funky Family, Maria on Epidemic from South Africa (1973), Fran O’Toole from the album Reflections Of Fran O’Toole (Mint Records 1976) and I presume that the Clap Your Hands Stamp Your Feet by Canadian Thundermug is also the same song…

My Version Is Better Than Yours Part 4 –Left Side vs Bonnie St. Claire –(Like A) Locomotion

Welcome to a special Dutch edition of My Version Is Better Than Yours! In fact this is a case of Peter Koelewijn versus himself as he produced both versions.

Left Side –(Like A) Locomotion/Mama You Said The Right Words –Philips 6012362 (1973 NL)

For my money this may be my favourite Dutch single of all time. The Left Side original has one the best and catchy production jobs from the 70s. Peter somehow manages to create so much space yet adds so much texture. Listen to how the Leslie guitar morphs into a Fuzz part and groove to the judicious rhythmic use of the Wah Wah. The finale (not included in the edit –sorry) is simply breathtaking as all the parts converge with some strange trippy bleeps thrown in as well. It’s all so simple, but all so right. It’s a work of pure genius.

Bonnie St. Claire –Rocco/ (Like A) Locomotion –Philips 6012546 (1975 NL)

Peter revisits his great song with our Bonnie. Although relegated to the B side, it would have certainly been a better A side. This version is faster and starts off with a straight Get It On riff-off. The Gregorian chants are a nice touch and makes you think of what could have been if Peter had lent his hand to producing Lemming. Bonnie’s performance is great as usual and she was still unaware of the meaning of the number 52 or that she would ever be compared to an Orangutan...

Funky Family were probably a German band and they did a pretty good cover from a male point of view, which kind of misses the point. Wild Angels - Clap Your Hands And Stamp Your Feet/Wild Angels Rock And Roll –Decca F13456 (1973 UK)

The Wild Angels started out in the late 60’s as a purist Rockabilly band, but by the time they signed to Decca they opened up to more general rockin’ material. Their Out At Last LP from ’72 is great with mean covers of Brand New Cadillac and I Fought The Law sitting nicely next to some choice originals. I’m sure there was some gritting of teeth as they sold out by going all out for a hit. However they really deliver a high octane rockin’ performance of this song admirably produced by a young Martin Rushent.
