Jackie Christian & Flight –Love/ The Last Time I Go To Baltimore

Jackie Christian & Flight –Love/ The Last Time I Go To Baltimore –Albert –AP 10457 (1974 Aus)

Here is another Vanda and Young obscurity... Formerly known as The Inheritance, upon hooking up with Vanda & Young, the band changed their name and released this fine single on Albert. Featuring Jackie Christian (née Konstantinos Kougious) on vocals and Tony Currenti on drums (who in fact also drummed on the Aussie version of High Voltage), the band unleash two tracks that are real stand outs, yet very different from each other. Love is more overtly pop and builds nicely into a neo-Spectorian finale akin to the Righteous Brothers in tight Conti cardigans. The Last Time I Go To Baltimore sits comfortably with some of the best US themed songs George and Harry wrote. It’ s a much rockier and exuberant  turn of affairs with a damn catchy tune and really great vocals. More Vanda & Young soon...

Absolute aces on both sides. Top side is pure Marcus Hook Roll Band - did this precede or follow 'Natural Man?' The plug is fabbo AM pop gold that I almost prefer to the rockier a-side. Just fantastic!

I had a copy of this on Canadian Polydor back in the early 80s (where it was issued as by "Jackie Christian and Target" - maybe someone can explain the name change?), and have been looking for a replacement for 30-odd years! Thanks!! :D

Jackie Christian and Flight worked with Vanda and Young on a number of sessions. Flight was made up of Tony Currenti on drums, Phil Doherty and Michael Meehan on guitars and vocals, and Steve Hart on Bass. Jackie Christian and Flight also recorded 'Love Fever' with Vanda and Young. However a decision was made to give the song to Ray Burgess who simply sang over the music track already laid down by Flight. The song was a top ten hit for Ray. Not long after, Jackie Christian went solo and the members of Flight disbanded and went on to join various succesful bands. I believe that the name Target was used overseas as Flight was registered to another band.

Actually, they were called "Jackie Christian and Target" in Australia - in fact that's the name we booked them by for our School dance in 1974-75. Don't know why the name change. Great band and a lovely bunch of guys. After a number of departures (Mick Meehan to Flake etc), Kon and Tony kept the band going as a three-piece doing more soul-type stuff for quite a while. I remember Tony telling me he had just done the ACDC album...
