Smiley –I know What I Want

Smiley –Penelope/ I Know What I Want –LMCE LM 78008 (1972 French issue)

Post Creation single featuring Bob Garner. Although the A side is written by Kenny Pickett, I am unsure if he actually appears on the record. I Know What I Want ( written by Bob Garner) is an atmospheric semi-Glam/Late Fuzzbeat Stomper. As a further link to The Creation; both sides were co-produced by Shel Talmy, but strangely the production lacks a bit of power and bite. The A side is pretty hard to take: It’s a seriously grating piece of 70s Bubblegum, with obnoxious kiddie vocals . Anyone have confirmation of the line up on this single?

Click below for an edit of I Know What I Want and a snippet of Penelope (for information purposes only!)

The sparse arrangement and guitar thrusts here are VERY reminiscent of Slade's 'Coz I Love You.' Kind of like Slade meets the Sorrows. Nice.

Duggi I was the bass player with the band Smiley,John Ryan on vocals,Billy Fogg on drums,Peter Richardson on Guitar,Robert Garner on Guitar,Douglas Dickson on bass,we didn't really have an option to the release of Penelope, wasn't really representative of the band, kenny Picket wrote the A side, never played on it,organ was a session man brought in,I agree the production was poor even for those days..if you require any photo's/information,please contact me at this email address..
tex_as_ranger@yahoo.co.uk ..be pleased to oblige,Oh! and I never saw the French cover until now..I have the Polydor release for Germany.

Hi Robin.... update on band ... Search until I found them .. Sadly John Ryan died a few years ago .. Met Bob and he is suffering from Alzheimers, we had a good hour before he became tired... Pete guitarist is or was withe "The Golden Eagles" an Eagles tribute band.. Billy the drummer stays at home rearing African Grey parrots, shame he would come out for a chat ...As for me still playing bass..going to audition with a blues band who hope to go touring Europe and UK ... hope I get the gig ... Exciting !!!

Hi, I am Peter Richardsons wife, Sharon. Did you ever find any other Smiley recordings? Peter doesn't have any copies. Sadly Bob Garner died very recently, and this has made us all revisit a lot of memories. Peter is still in touch with Duggi and Billy.
