PUREPOP

Reviews of tasty and obscure hook-filled rock'n' roll releases (Glam, Power Pop, Pop/psych,Garage, Surf, 60s Girl Group and Protest/Folk Rock). Plus any quirky musings that tickle my fancy... I created this blog in order to stimulate interest, share discoveries and encourage people to go out and search for the original vinyl. Hopefully this blog might also encourage labels to actually compile some of this stuff officialy. Snippets are recorded from vinyl onto cassette!!! and into the PC...

Smiley –I know What I Want

Smiley –Penelope/ I Know What I Want –LMCE LM 78008 (1972 French issue)

Post Creation single featuring Bob Garner. Although the A side is written by Kenny Pickett, I am unsure if he actually appears on the record. I Know What I Want ( written by Bob Garner) is an atmospheric semi-Glam/Late Fuzzbeat Stomper. As a further link to The Creation; both sides were co-produced by Shel Talmy, but strangely the production lacks a bit of power and bite. The A side is pretty hard to take: It’s a seriously grating piece of 70s Bubblegum, with obnoxious kiddie vocals . Anyone have confirmation of the line up on this single?

The sparse arrangement and guitar thrusts here are VERY reminiscent of Slade's 'Coz I Love You.' Kind of like Slade meets the Sorrows. Nice.

Duggi I was the bass player with the band Smiley,John Ryan on vocals,Billy Fogg on drums,Peter Richardson on Guitar,Robert Garner on Guitar,Douglas Dickson on bass,we didn't really have an option to the release of Penelope, wasn't really representative of the band, kenny Picket wrote the A side, never played on it,organ was a session man brought in,I agree the production was poor even for those days..if you require any photo's/information,please contact me at this email address..
tex_as_ranger@yahoo.co.uk ..be pleased to oblige,Oh! and I never saw the French cover until now..I have the Polydor release for Germany.
