Galahad –Rocket Summer

Galahad –Rocket Summer/Elephant Stomp –Bell 2008 150 (1973 German issue)

This should be filed under tripped out Glam! Galahad is a studio creation from Gerry Morris and producer Tony Atkins. This duo were involved with countless obscurities including Boulevard, Cymbaline, Blunderbuss, Geoff Whitehorn and were behind the great Gerry Morris Psych/pop single Only The beginning with its ace B side Sunflower. Anyhow Rocket Summer is a slow-paced fuzzed groover with psychedelic inclinations, note the HEYs with the backward reverb effect and they most definitely go into uncharted territory with the Spinal Tap –like voice-overs. The B side is a psychedelisized Glam instrumental swamped in cavernous reverb. Keep on stomping with the mushrooms lads…

Excellent. Good work Robin!
One of the more ludicrous records I've heard lately and no mistake. I'm going to need to get me one of these.

Is it the same band wot did at least two singles on Polydor in Germany, 71/72? If so, are they anywhere near as good, do you know?

I somehow don't think they're the same band. I have seen a listing for Galahad's George and The Dragon single on Polydor and it's filed under celtic/folk...not vey promising in any case...However the Gerry Morris single is fab and there's also an album "only the beginning" on York Records that may be worth looking out for...

Rocket Summer has a fantastic riff and an incredible groove. Far from being 'ludicrous', it effortlessly outdoes most dance records made in the last ten years. The 'so long' vocal is so cool that if a black group had done it the rock history books would probably be raving endlessly about it.

Haven´t heard this since 1973, apart from my lousy cassette recording from radio! My big favourite from that year. Actually it made #20 on the Swedish Radio Chart "10 i topp"

I suppose Galahad were not a proper band but another studio creation by Tony Atkins, who produced all their 3 singles, the other ones saw the involvment of John Hetherington (Bent Frame) and Peter Wood (Hush, Magnet, Hallelujah, Al Stewart etc)
