Pheon Bear –War Against War

With a couple of copies of this single recently selling on ebay, it seemed a good time to upload a sound clip of this great single.

Below is my original review. It has since been pointed out to me that that it sounds a lot like Jesse Hector and I couldn’t agree more…Enjoy!

Click on title for the soundclip

Pheon Bear – War Against War/ 87th Precinct – Pye 7N 45232 (1973 UK)

The A side is a real loud cruncher falling somewhere between Freakbeat and Glam. It has ’66 Yardbird -like strident guitar breaks, feedback and a raspy shouted vocal performance from an angry Mr. Bear who just had someone spit in his porridge. The song itself is pretty basic, not moving too far from a 12 bar structure, but it’s chant-like chorus of Gotta keep up the war against war is pretty effective. But who the hell is this guy???. This came with a nice picture stamp on the label…a cheaper option to picture sleeves anyhow…

Used to go to primary school with Pheon but at that time his name was Phil Bailey. We played support group at a gig New Years Eve 1964 where he headlined. It ended up in chaos but Pheon had left by then!
Believe he was big in Denmark at some time and he hails from the aptly named Rowtown, Addlestone, Surrey,UK where I think he still lurks sometimes. He used a standard lamp base as a mike stand! Apologies for being 3 years late with this post!

I am Lynton Guest, the producer of this record along with Jimmy Edwards. Pheon did indeed hail from Rowtown and still lives in Surrey. In the years since this record was released he has had many successes in the music business. And you are right, his name is in fact Phil Bailey, sometimes known as PHAB. We made the record as an angry social comment on the world as it was then. Little has changes. You can read a good story about Pheon (Phil) in my book, 'The Trials of Michael Jackson', which is all over the internet. Anyone can reach me at Lynton6@gmail.com

Hi Lynton. Good to hear from you. I also really enjoyed your production on Linda Kendrick's Sympathy For The Devil. All the best
